WHY INVEST IN A WIND TURBINE?
In the summer of 2004, Jiminy Peak decided to look toward alternative energy methods to reduce costs and fossil fuel dependency. After much research, a wind turbine seemed to make the most sense for us.

It was a bold move to start down this path. It was a longterm commitment to something really big, there was no turning back! It made good business sense, good sense for planet Earth and sent a strong message that Jiminy was putting an investment in a long term renewable asset that will be good for future generations.

Hiring a consultant was the first move. Then on to studies, research, and analysis. A wind analysis lead to permitting, bird studies, interconnection options with the power companies, financial modeling, internal versus external electrical usage and actual specifications for the wind turbine itself. Jiminy’s management learned a lot in a short time period!

After some persuasion, GE agreed to sell us a turbine. Jiminy signed the contract on April 4, 2006. The fork in the road less traveled was full of challenges, surprises and creative juices that just kept flowing as we tackled issue after issue: coordinating blades from Brazil, machinery (nacelle) from Germany, electrical components from California and tower structures from Quebec. All arriving at the base of our mountain, the last week in June. We managed to get it up to the site along a two mile road (Left Bank trail) and actually constructed the turbine!

We’re proud to be the first ski area on North America to generate our own energy, harnessing the wind. We hope you’ll come out, take some runs and choose the mountain the makes a difference.

MOUNTAIN CREEK
Mountain Creek is NJ’s backyard playground for skiers and snowboarders of any age, featuring snowmaking and lighting across 45 trails serviced by 11 lifts with a 1040’ vertical, and luxurious townhome-style accommodations at Black Creek Sanctuary or the slopeside Appalachian hotel, which also hosts small groups and meetings. There is also free ski and board check resort-wide.

The resort’s two base areas were re-invented with ‘Vernon’ dedicated to great leisure skiing and snowboarding for all levels with beginner slopes, cruisers, and mogul runs, plus the return of five great intermediate trails on the ‘backside’! ‘Vernon’ is where you can slide your way to great family fun in the Coca Cola Tube Park, or take advantage of one of the many lesson programs, Kids Kamp or the top notch rental fleet.

The South Base, including both South and Bear peaks, has become the East’s Largest Terrain Park and will be the coolest place to ski or ride this winter. The revamped lodge is an action sports community center, including awesome events, a parent’s lounge, a safety interpretive center, a new retail store, and the new hot spot, Grover’s. Music and art are an important part of the scene, including djs and live music, custom artwork and photography. The world-famous JibLab has designed one of the best parks in the country, divided into 8 districts, with a focus on progression throughout, in order to take guests from their first park experience to the pros, and our Ride and Ski School is offering Switch Academy to teach our guests all the freestyle skills they need to become a park pro!
